4. Stay on roads posted 35 mph or less
That is the legal ceiling for low-speed vehicles in NC. It keeps you off US 158 and the fast stretches of NC 12 automatically. The posted sign is your rulebook, and when you are not sure, the neighborhood streets are always the safe answer.
5. Cross US 158 only at a light
Never travel along the bypass, and cross it only at signalized intersections where permitted, going straight across. Wait for a full green and clear lanes; 50 mph traffic closes gaps faster than a cart accelerates.
6. Slow way down for sand
OBX side streets collect drifts of soft sand, especially after wind. Sand steers carts in ways drivers don’t expect: it grabs the front wheels and pulls. Coast through it slowly, keep both hands on the wheel, and skip any patch deep enough to leave tire trenches.
