How do you get from Norfolk airport to the Outer Banks?
There is no commercial airport on the Outer Banks and no scheduled shuttle, so you either rent a car at ORF or pre-book a private transfer. OBX Drive books a door-to-door driver from Norfolk International to any Outer Banks rental address, Corolla to Hatteras. Plan on roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to the northern beaches; the driver meets you outside the Arrivals Terminal between Crosswalks 1 and 2, and cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the ride.
Updated October 21, 2026 · ORF to Outer Banks, NC private transfers
Private airport transfers between Norfolk International (ORF) and the Outer Banks, door to door. There is no commercial airport on the Outer Banks and no scheduled shuttle serves the beach towns, so the ride from ORF is the one part of a fly-in trip that has to be arranged before you land. OBX Drive books it: a chauffeur meets you at the airport and drives you straight to the driveway of your rental home, and the return run to your departing flight is booked the same way.
New vehicles are being added — check back soon or call us to book.
How an ORF airport transfer works
Send us your travel dates, the rental address and your flight details. Airport rides are booked as a request: we confirm the driver and the price with you before anything is charged, and payment is then handled securely through Stripe, so card details never touch this website. Share your flight number when you book so the driver can track delays on the day.
At Norfolk International, pre-arranged car services collect passengers outside the Arrivals Terminal between Crosswalks 1 and 2 — the airport’s own pickup area for limousine and courtesy vehicles. Collect your bags, walk out of Arrivals, and meet your driver there.
Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before your ride begins, with a full refund. Inside 48 hours, contact us and we will do our best to rebook; refunds inside that window are at our discretion. The full wording is on our policies page.
The drive from ORF to the beach
From the airport at 2200 Norview Avenue in Norfolk, the route runs south through Chesapeake, into North Carolina, and along US-158 across the Wright Memorial Bridge into Kitty Hawk. Plan on roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to the northern beaches in normal conditions. That bridge is the only highway crossing of Currituck Sound on the North Carolina coast, and NCDOT notes that the single crossing means increased congestion, especially in summer — which is why a summer Saturday changeover runs longer. Hatteras Island adds serious time on top: Hatteras village is another 1.5 hours or more past Kitty Hawk.
For the return leg on a summer departure, leave the beach three hours or more before your flight. Bridge and Chesapeake traffic are real.
Where we take you
Any rental address on the Outer Banks, north to south: Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo and Wanchese on Roanoke Island, and Hatteras Island through Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras village. Give us the rental address when you book. For Hatteras Island addresses, confirm the pickup covers them when you request the ride — the extra distance matters.
Transfer, rental car, or both?
Renting a car at the airport makes sense when your week is full of driving — a Hatteras lighthouse day, restaurant-hopping between towns, big grocery runs. Otherwise you are paying for seven days of car to solve a two-drive problem: airport to house, house to airport.
The alternative more fly-in families are choosing is to take the transfer and have the wheels waiting at the house instead: a golf cart in the driveway for neighborhood runs, and a locally owned rental car delivered just for the excursion days. You pay for a vehicle only on the days you use one. Our guides on renting versus bringing your own car and getting around without a car run the numbers.
Why not just take a rideshare?
Getting a rideshare from the airport toward the beach sometimes works. Getting one from the beach back to ORF is where trips fall apart: coverage on the Outer Banks is thin, especially south of Nags Head and late at night, and a driver has little reason to accept a run that ends two hours from home. When it is a 7 a.m. flight and the app is spinning with no drivers, there is no plan B. For anything with a departure time attached, book transportation that is committed in advance. The same drivers cover chauffeur rides within the Outer Banks — day trips and nights out — and limousine service for weddings and events. The full breakdown is in our ORF-to-OBX transportation guide.
Common questions
How far is Norfolk airport from the Outer Banks?
Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to the northern beaches in normal traffic, and noticeably more on summer Saturdays or if you are headed down Hatteras Island. Hatteras village is 1.5 hours or more beyond Kitty Hawk.
Is there a shuttle from Norfolk airport to the Outer Banks?
No scheduled public shuttle serves the beach towns. The realistic options are a rental car or a pre-booked private transfer, which is what this page is for.
Where does the driver meet me at ORF?
Outside the Arrivals Terminal between Crosswalks 1 and 2, the airport’s designated pickup area for pre-arranged limousine and courtesy vehicles. Share your flight number when you book so the driver can track delays.
Can I book the return trip to the airport as well?
Yes. Book both legs with your dates and flight details. For a summer departure, leave the beach three hours or more before your flight, because bridge and Chesapeake traffic add real time.
Traveling with kids: can I get a car seat?
Ask when you book. Tell us how many seats you need and the children’s ages, and we confirm it with the driver before anything is charged, so you know before deciding whether to fly with your own.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your ride begins, with a full refund. Inside 48 hours, contact us and we will do our best to rebook; refunds inside that window are at our discretion.
